IGNATIEFF'S BIG GAMBLE

Ambition sometimes gets in the way of reality. Take Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff as a case in point.

With the election just a few days away and his poll numbers in freefall, Ignatieff must be mindful of the adage: “Be careful what you wish for.” Ignatieff so desperately desired to become prime minister that he forced a federal election call. This came at a time when the electorate had no real political issues for which to bring down the government. Sure, there was the issue of contempt of Parliament. However, I suspect that most Canadians saw this as nothing more than a manufactured opportunity to force an election.

Ignatieff couldn’t see beyond his own narcissism and recognize that he suffers from a low likeability factor.

This election has turned out to be a popularity race and the winner is Jack Layton. Layton’s popularity can’t be denied as reflected in the most recent election poll results. While it is unlikely that Layton has a shot at becoming prime minister, short of a coalition, it is very likely he will bring down the Liberals as the loyal opposition.

The consequence of Ignatieff’s attempted coup will be is his own political destruction and possibly the demise of the Liberal Party of Canada itself. Ignatieff’s blind ambition has sparked an “orange wave” for the NDP across the country. Christy Clark and the BC Liberals should be very concerned about a provincial election call anytime soon.

My advice to Michael Ignatieff is to stay away from poker. You're a bad bluffer.
